VINCENT BRODERICK was born in Carramore, Bullaun, Loughrea, Co. Galway in 1920. Vincent and his brother ReLer became interested in traditional Irish music at an early age, mainly due to the influence of their mother Ann. By their early twenties the two brothers had become accomplished traditional musicians and followed the example set for them by the musicians of the Ballinakill and Aughrim Slopes Céilf Bands.
In the early 1950s, Vincent, like many others, left the west of Ireland and came to work in Dublin. He immediately joined the Pipers' Club in Thomas Street and became a regular attender and prominent member of the club. At this venue, Vincent joined with some of the greats of Irish music; Leo Rowsome, Mrs. Harrington, John Joe Gardiner, Willie Clancy, Sean Seery and many more. By the mid 50s, Vincent Broderick's name was synonymous with accomplished flute playing and could be heard on many recordings of that period. Vincent went on to become the All-Ireland Champion and Oireachtas winner, followed a couple of years later by his brother, Peter.
As a traditional player, Vincent was associated with the Kincora CéilI Band and was a founder member of the Eamcnn Ceannt CéilI Band with Vi Preston. He travelled throughout Ireland, Great Britain and America with Comhaltas CeoltOirI Eireann demonstrating the best in traditional flute playing with his unique style and breath control - two of his envied attributes as a player.
In recent years Vincent has spent much of his time teaching flute and tin whistle to people of all ages as well as compiling his compositions for publication. He has also directed, produced and participated in a number of Scoraiocht productions, some of which have become All-Ireland winners.

FOREWORD
The Turoe Stone, Vincent's first book of compositions, was highly acclaimed and many of the tunes in it have made their way into the everyday traditional repertoire. Wherever traditional music is played around the world, you can expect that a Broderick tune will turn up. It is the mark of acceptance of a new tune that it s played and crafted into the traditional repertoire by the genera] body of traditional musicians.
Vincent, as a master flute player, was always generous with his music and he taught young musicians even up until recent years in the Pipers' Club branch of Comhaltas, of which he was a long time member. He shared his music too with oui young musicians in Ashbourne Comhaltas, and we had one very enjoyable and memorable composers' night here Vincent, Fr PJ Kelly and John Brady played and talked about their compositions with the young musicians.
One of the striking features of Vincent's tunes is that he seems to have found the balance of nice melody and lilting rhythm, while still maintaining the simplicity that is the hallmark of the old enduring tunes. He is a man close to nature and offei took his inspiration from the sights and sounds and happenings around him, like the sound of a stream or the singing of the birds.
Vincent is now a hearty 86 years old, and still playing a tune. This second book adds to his collection and it consists of tunes composed in more recent years. I hope you enjoy it and that his tunes continue to give pleasure to musician, d n
and listener alike. Go raibh fada buan e.
